We are happy to start the new school year seeing our students in person! Students’ attendance is crucial for academic success. We are writing to work in partnership with you, so that together we can ensure the safety and well-being of every student while we continue to educate and help students blossom. In order to do so, it is imperative that we make sure that our students attend school consistently and come to school ready to learn.
The pandemic requires us to be cautious. Therefore, we would like to review our attendance policy and protocols:
If your child is sick, please keep your child home.
If your child is home, please contact his/her teacher via Parent Square. Furthermore, parents can now complete the Student Absent Form that is posted on Parent Square and/or sent by Ms. Pawson. Lastly, you can call the Main office at 718-819-2230.
When your child returns to school, please send a medical note explaining why your child was absent.
If you are going on an extended trip, please provide a copy of the flight information to our school secretary, Stacy Zoumboulis ([email protected] ), and let your child’s teacher know. This allows the teacher to give the student's work that he/she may miss.
Please be aware that even if you provide medical or trip documentation, we will be obligated to still send a letter home stating the number of absences. Student absences will still be coded as a medical explanation or extended vacation.
School Response and Support
Your child’s teacher will reach out to offer support and ensure that your child is okay if he/she is absent for more than one day.
Our attendance team will reach out to students that are at-risk of being chronically absent and provide interventions or support.
Our district attendance teacher may reach out to families that continue to have chronic attendance problems.
We at P.S. 130 know the importance of keeping your child safe during this pandemic; furthermore, we know the value of in person learning and the impact attendance has on learning. The Department of Education attendance policy requires that we document all absences and assist families with any issues that may be impeding their child’s attendance. Please contact our Parent Coordinator, Kelly Pawson, ([email protected]) or our School Counselor, Ereni Polydefkis, ([email protected]) if you need support or resources to help with your child’s needs.
Research shows that attendance does affect children’s academic progress, and here at P.S. 130 we want to ensure that all children have an opportunity to excel and achieve. We look forward to working in partnership to ensure that students are safe and come to school ready to grow and learn.
Sincerely,
Loreli Aguiar Ereni Polydefkis The Attendance Team Assistant Principal School Counselor
